Dame Edith Ngaio Marsh, according to Wikipedia was a most illustrious figure and as Bruce Porter, (Bruce G Porter on Facebook), said, a โ€œposhโ€, user of the English language. 

โ€œItโ€™s the quite posh British accent which was prevalent back then amongst upper middle class New Zealanders of the timeโ€

โ€œWomen back in those days especially from colonial pioneer stock were no nonsense young ladiesโ€

โ€œAmerican women would have been similar in many waysโ€

โ€œAnd British women too for that matter,  and it reflected in their speech, no time for small talkโ€ฆโ€
