Dame Edith Ngaio Marsh, according to Wikipedia was a most illustrious figure and as Bruce Porter, (Bruce G Porter on Facebook), said, a βposhβ, user of the English language.
βIt’s the quite posh British accent which was prevalent back then amongst upper middle class New Zealanders of the timeβ
βWomen back in those days especially from colonial pioneer stock were no nonsense young ladiesβ
βAmerican women would have been similar in many waysβ
βAnd British women too for that matter, and it reflected in their speech, no time for small talkβ¦β
