A bipartisan bill has passed in the U.S. House that seeks to slash the salary of Democrat President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to just $1.
The legislation saw Democrats join with Republicans for the vote.
The bipartisan Homeland Security appropriations bill seeks to hold Mayorkas and the DHS to account over Biden’s escalating illegal migrant crisis at the border.
The bill secured two Democrat votes from Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA).
The House used a tool called the Holman rule.
The rule allows lawmakers to alter an individual government employee’s salary.
The amendment to slash Mayorkas’s salary was introduced by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and passed unanimously.
Biggs tweeted about his amendment
The congressman said he to “defund Secretary Mayorkas’ salary to $0.”
While almost as low, Mayorkas’ salary would actually be $1.
As the head of the DHS, Mayorkas’ salary currently stands at $203,500 per year.
Biggs wrote that Mayorkas “is in dereliction of his duties and doesn’t deserve a penny more.
“If my colleagues won’t impeach him and he won’t resign, this is the next step.”
Biden’s border chief has overseen record-breaking disasters.
In August, the United States suffered a recordnumber of illegal border crossings.
Since last October, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has seized nearly 26,000 pounds of fentanyl being trafficked across the Southwest border.
House Republicans have chosen border security as a top priority in the ongoing fight to fund the government.
Border hawks pulled a parliamentary trick to withhold the bill from being sent to the Senate.
The bill was withheld until the Senate passed H.R. 2, the tough border security bill passed by the House.
